American record label focussing on hip hop / black music. Owned by entertainment attorney and artist manager and his son , Blackground was initially founded in 1993 as to release music by 's niece, . Named until 2000, it switched distribution deals over time - releases were distributed by Jive, Atlantic, Virgin, Universal, Interscope and Reservoir Media. In 2021 revamped to under Empire, then Warner distribution. Please look up the logo on a specific release carefully to distinquish which one of these three labels should be used.
