After relocating to Atlanta in early autumn 1972, Sounds of the South was originally conceived by producer / musician / A+R man while seeing at Funochio's House of Rock. In early 1973, was launched to oversee 's debut recording. The world's first southern rock imprint was officially created in September 1973 as a joint label and production agreement with , with many of its recordings engineered at , a local facility Kooper later co-owned with producer . By 1974, the label ceased operations, with subsequent reissues released under the MCA brand, and owned today by .
