Max Creek is an American jam band formed in 1971 in Hartford, Connecticut. Renowned for their improvisational live performances, they blend a variety of genres, including rock, country, reggae, soul, jazz, calypso, and blues, creating a distinctive and eclectic sound. Their music is characterized by extended jams, tight musicianship, and a communal concert experience. The band was founded by bassist John Rider and guitarist Dave Reed, both students at the Hartt School of Music. They were soon joined by drummer Bob Gosselin. In the early 1970s, keyboardist Mark Mercier and guitarist Scott Murawski became key members, solidifying the lineup that would define Max Creek's sound. Over the years, the rhythm section evolved, with drummers like Bill Carbone and percussionist Jamemurrell Stanley contributing to the band's dynamic performances. Max Creek has been a staple of the New England music scene for over five decades, cultivating a dedicated fan base known as "Creek Freaks." Their concerts are likened to family gatherings, with a palpable energy and profound sense of connection between the band and audience. They have performed at numerous festivals and events, solidifying their reputation as one of the premier jam bands in the United States. The band's influence extends to other musicians as well; for instance, Phish bassist Mike Gordon has cited Max Creek as one of his favorite bands and has sat in with them on several occasions. As of 2025, Max Creek continues to perform, celebrating over 50 years of music and maintaining their status as a beloved fixture in the jam band community.
